The Epsom Derby

Table by Géricault

If the Liverpool Grand National is without a doubt the most emblematic horse race in the United Kingdom, the Derby Stakes, better known as the Epsom Derby, is the one that involves the largest allocation, with a total allocation of £1,625,000. The English counterpart of the Irish Derby of Ireland and Prix du Jockey Club de France, this flat horse race is ranked Group 1 and is among the most prestigious in the world.

Characteristics of the Epsom Derby

Scheduled in June at Epsom Downs, this race is competed by 3 year old horses, geldings excluded. Inaugurated in 1780, it is one of the oldest equestrian events in the world. The Epsom Derby takes place on a grass course 2,423 meters long. Second stage of the English Triple Crown of thoroughbred racing, it is open to females, even the latter rarely take part.

Nearly sixteen horses enter the race and the best ones share a total allocation of £1,625,000. A jackpot of £921,528 goes to the winner alone. In addition, the winner often competes in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Diamond Stakes, which takes place during the month of July. Later, in October, he takes part in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in France.
